The seventh grade language arts program focuses on the Consensus Curriculum of the Diocese of Richmond. The core texts are Loyola Press VOYAGES in ENGLISH 7, Pearson Prentice Hall LITERATURE, and Sadlier-Oxford VOCABULARY WORKSHOP (C). We balance an emphasis of grammar (including the use of conventions), the writing process, vocabulary development and the genres of literature.
Grammar, and its application to student writing, remains a focus throughout the school year. Previously learned grammar skills are supported through the use of daily maintenance exercises. Those skills are then expanded to a greater depth to further assist students in their writing. Use of the writing process will continue to guide students as they compose a variety of essays including descriptive, creative, and expository as well as a research paper. Vocabulary development will stress word analysis by using affixes, analogies, and word roots to discover meanings.
Reading skills continue to expand as students analyze selections and make connections to their own life and society. Students compare diverse literature selections and learn to read critically as they search for examples of literary devices used by the authors. In addition to the literature textbook, students also read selections from a variety of classic and contemporary novels.
Science – Physical Science
The seventh grade Physical Science course examines the wonders of God by exploring the chemical and physical principles that are expressed in His magnificent creation.
Through review and extension of the basic principles of the scientific method and scientific inquiry, students examine some of the building blocks of God’s universe: atoms, elements, and compounds. Students study the development of the modern periodic table, and they construct models to reinforce important principles. The curriculum introduces the basics of chemistry, including chemical bonding and chemical reactions, and the principles of electricity and magnetism. Students conduct a scientific research project to further explore an area of interest to them. This project allows students to design and conduct a controlled experiment and apply the scientific method. They analyze their data and present their findings in a formal presentation in front of peers and adults. Finally, students explore the basic principles of physics, including motion, forces, and energy. Throughout the course, students learn about scientists and classic scientific experiments and deepen their understanding of the history of scientific discovery and how it has been pursued.

In Spanish I, part I, students begin to develop their speaking skills in a beginning level of communication. Grammar and grammatical structures will be introduced in a very basic level and integrated into various themes. Listening, writing and reading skills are also incorporated as each individual theme is introduced. The students will also develop an awareness of the culture of various Spanish-speaking countries.
At this level, students will learn to communicate in real situations about topics that are meaningful to them. To develop the speaking skills emphasis is placed on the use of Spanish in the classroom. Grammar is integrated into instruction according to the vocabulary and grammatical structures needed in the various situations that are presented.
The student will exchange simple spoken and written information in Spanish.
- Use basic greetings, farewells, and expressions of courtesy both orally and in writing.
- Express likes and dislikes requests, descriptions, and directions.
- Ask questions and provide responses about self and other familiar topics, such as family members, personal belongings, school and leisure activities, time, and weather, recreation activities with emphasis on the present tense
- Correct intonation and pronunciation, especially when presenting prepared material orally.
- Accurate word order, punctuation, accents, and spelling when integrating writing and reading skills.
- Present rehearsed material in Spanish, dialogues, and songs.
Cultural: The student will develop an awareness of Spanish-speaking cultures.
- Relating to time, education, and the roles of family members.
- Identify some customs and traditions of Spanish-speaking cultures, such as greetings, celebrations, holiday practices, and forms of address that demonstrate politeness.
- Recognize the, customs and traditions, of Spanish speakers, such as the concepts of the extended family, a daughter’s 15th birthday, and typical foods.
- Identify major cities and geographical features in Spanish-speaking countries.
